Purple Nymph

I wanted to share some insights about why purple nymphs have become such a standout choice for trout fishing. The colour purple is exceptionally visible to trout at a range of depths and in various light conditions, often serving as a powerful attractor. Trout have four distinct colour receptors, which means they’re especially adept at picking up blue-violet spectrums—making purple really pop underwater, whether the water is crystal clear or slightly murky.

Beyond just being attention-grabbing, the purple coloration actually has a natural basis. Some aquatic nymphs, including certain mayfly species, can develop purplish or olive hues as they prepare to emerge and ascend toward the surface. This colour transformation is tied to the developing adult insect becoming visible inside the nymphal shuck, just before the insect completes its emergence.

Our Purple Nymph is designed to replicate this phenomenon with impressive realism. It performs beautifully, whether you fish it as a point fly on a nymphing rig or use it as a dropper beneath a dry fly. This versatility, combined with its visibility and natural mimicry, makes it a fantastic addition to your fly box.
