Lace Wing (Vine Hopper)

The lace wine dry fly, also known as the passion vine hopper or lace moth, is a small insect that appears in late summer and autumn, particularly in New Zealand. It is commonly found in rivers and lakes, where trout actively feed on it.

Have you experienced that frustrating day where you have emptied the contents of your fly box in an attempt to match what the trout are focused on, but the fish just keep taking something small from the surface or just under it? It is probably Lace Wings.

This fly is fished in the surface film behind a small dry, wet the wing before you cast, so that the fly sits in the film, then hang on.
