I enjoyed two fabulous days of fishing with a great friend under wonderful weather conditions for the opening day of a Favorite Wairarapa River.
Upon arrival, the water was slightly coloured; however, it cleared perfectly over the course of the trip. We connected with some very large brown trout, but unfortunately, we lost four on the first day. One fish was so big that my five-weight rod bent to the cork as I attempted to prevent it from heading out of bounds.
The fish we caught were on my fish candy, which is a version of my blood worm, as well as my lethal fish killer. We landed several impressive brown and rainbow trout in a truly beautiful environment. This trip reinforced the importance of trying different flies to crack the code and to embrace varying offerings. One evening, we refined my blood worm pattern by adding a UV collar, which made an immediate difference.
